Incentives for Businesses
Energy Efficiency for Local Businesses: The City of Hayward is working with the Business Energies Solutions Team (BEST*) Program to offer free facility energy assessments and incentives for energy efficient lighting retrofits, select refrigeration equipment, controls, and other proven technologies. Hayward businesses can cut their utility bills while improving light quality, product appearance and the workplace environment. Call (800-576-6405) or e-mail (best@kema.com) today for your free energy assessment and save!

*The BEST Program is a member of the East Bay Energy Watch (EBEW) Partnership, which is a joint project of Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), participating cities in the East Bay, and local energy efficiency experts. This program is funded by California utility customers and is administered by PG&E under the auspices of the California Pacific Utilities Commission (CPUC).

Firearm Safety Kits
The Hayward Police Department has a limited supply of firearm safety kits (gun locks) available to any firearm owner in the City of Hayward.

We are really encouraging residents to pick up a safety kit so that they can securely store their firearms. The goal of distributing the gun locks is to prevent a child or any other unauthorized person from getting a hold of a firearm in your home. We urge all gun owners—especially those with chil-dren in their homes—to use safety locks on their firearms and keep them out of sight, and secured in a gun safe.

The gun-lock program is sponsored by Project ChildSafe, which is organ-ized and managed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and funded by the firearms industry and grants from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The safety devices are short cables with locking ends that are looped through the cylinders of revolvers, the bolt-holding devices of bolt-action rifles, and the ejection ports of automatic pistols and pump-action shot-guns. They open with a key.

Only car accidents and cancer cause more deaths among children and young adults than accidents, suicides and homicides involving firearms. Studies have linked ease of access to guns as a contributing factor to the high firearms death rate.

Green Business Certification Information
On June 15, 2012, the City of Hayward Main Library and Weekes Branch Library received certifications as Green Businesses. To achieve this status, the City Libraries had to successfully implement green business practices in Solid Waste Reduction and Recycling, Energy Conservation, Water Conservation, Pollution Prevention, and sustainable Purchasing and Procurement practices. The City is actively working to show its responsible environmental stewardship to the community by:
  • Complying with all applicable environmental protection and enhancement regulations and striving to exceed compliance
  • Conserving energy, water, materials, and other resources
  • Developing and implementing practices that prevent pollution and waste
  • Conducting and fostering environmentally responsible business practices within the community
We encourage other Hayward businesses to strive for these goals. Please visit www.greenbiz.ca.gov for more information.
